MLA salary increase by 400% in Delhi
New Delhi,5 December: Delhi’s lawmakers are all set to see their salaries shoot up four times after the assembly approved a bill yesterday proposing a 400 per cent hike in their salaries . Justifying the move, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia made an emotional appeal on stressing the need to raise the salary, saying this will ensure a corruption-free environment among lawmakers. In the mean time,Congress leader Ajay Maken hit out at the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Admi Party (AAP) government in Delhi for approving a bill that hikes the salary of lawmakers to four times. Maken took to Twitter to vent his anger against the Delhi government.mla2
“In its 1st year, MLAs from party named as ‘Aam Aadmi’ resolved to increase their salary+ by 333% to Rs.2.6Lac/PM,” Maken tweeted. “Since they’ve awarded themselves annual hike of 10%- At the end of 5th yr (year) -it will be Rs.4.20Lac/PM or .5crore/yr. The assembly members will become the country’s highest paid lawmakers, drawing a salary more than that of the prime minister – once the bill is approved by the Centre and the President. The basic salary will go up from Rs.12,000 per month to Rs.50,000, while ministers will get Rs.80,000 instead of Rs 20,000 earlier. Besides that, the allowances will be increased by 10 per cent annually. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which holds three seats in the assembly, also opposed the move.Sources said its symbolic.
