Hearing on Jaitley’s criminal complaint on January 5
New Delhi,21 December: The Patiala House court on Monday adjourned till January 5 hearings in the criminal defamation suit filed by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley against Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and five leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Jaitley’s evidence will be recorded on that day. The finance minister has sought the prosecution of the AAP leaders under Section 500 of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly making “false and defamatory” statements against him over alleged irregularities in Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA). The finance minister has termed allegations of financial irregularities in the DDCA, which he headed for 13 years till 2013, as “baseless” and “false”.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha, where the matter was taken up for discussion, Jaitley said DDCA raised money by offering boxes to corporate houses as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) allocated just Rs.4 crore for building the Delhi stadium. “All the allegations against me are false and baseless,” Jaitley said in the Lok Sabha amidst Opposition’s massive uproar over the issue. Jaitley has already filed a civil defamation suit against the leaders seeking Rs.10 crore in damages even as the Delhi government resolved in a Cabinet decision to convene a special Assembly session on Tuesday to debate the matter. Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party on Monday said that it will not back off facing Jaitley’s defamantion cases.Delhi Chief Minister Kejriwal said that Jaitley cannot intimidate him and his party by filing a court case on the DDCA issue.”Jaitley cannot intimidate us with court case. We will continue our fight against corruption,” Kejriwal tweeted.
