Gandhis court date harrowing time for Commuters
New Delhi,19 December: Commuters in Delhi had a harrowing time on Saturday as roads around India Gate witnessed heavy traffic with hundreds of Congress supporters gathering outside the Patiala House court complex where party president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi appeared in the National Herald case. According to a Delhi Police officer, the traffic started building up at 2 pm, an hour before the Gandhis were to arrive in court, and cleared only after 4 pm. The Gandhis left the complex around 3.10 pm. Around 2,000 Congress supporters, including leaders, congregated in and around the court complex, a stone’s throw from India Gate, in scores of vehicles.
Many of the haphazardly parked cars spilled on to the India Gate radial and obstructed traffic movement. The situation was particularly worse around the Patiala House court. A massive presence of security personnel, including Delhi Police and paramilitary forces, coupled with at least a dozen police control vehicles and official cars compounded the problem. Delhi Police alone had deployed around 700 personnel around the court premises to manage traffic and control crowds. However, the measures did not prove effective as traffic moved at snail’s pace.
