DDCA row: Kirti Azad suspended from BJP
New Delhi,23 December: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday suspended MP Kirti Azad, who was in the line of fire for his tirade against Finance Minister Arun Jaitley over the alleged scams in Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA). Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kirti Azad, who has been raising the issue of corruption and irregularities in the Delhi and District Cricket Administration (DDCA), has been suspended from the party. Party national president Amit Shah suspended Azad from the BJP. The development comes close on heels of Azad insisting for a probe into the alleged irregularities in the DDCA which was headed by Jaitley for 13 years till 2013. While Jaitley has denied all the allegations as “baseless”, Azad kept stressing that things were not right in the sports body. He found support in Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal whose government has set up an inquiry commission to probe the allegations against DDCA and Jaitley.
The matter rocked both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha in the recent days with the Congress demanding that Jaitley should resign from the Union Cabinet. On his part Jaitley filed a civil suit and a criminal complaint against Kejriwal and five other Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders over the DDCA issue, alleging that the ruling dispensation in Delhi was making malicious comments and allegations against the Union Finance Minister. AAP retaliated by setting up an inquiry commission under Gopal Subramanium to probe the allegations against DDCA and Jaitley. The BJP leadership was annoyed with Azad for repeatedly raising the issue of alleged scam in DDCA both in and out of Parliament and alleging Jaitley had the knowledge about the corruption. While BJP had asked Azad to follow the party line and not to hold a press conference last Sunday on the alleged scam, the cricketer-turned-politician didn’t heed to that diktat and went ahead, reiterating his allegations. BJP president Shah had asked Azad not to hold the press conference. Azad also raised the matter in Lok Sabha, which BJP leaders believe was prompted by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, soon after Jaitley refuted all the allegations in the House. This, say observers, angered the BJP to brass which decided to act against Azad.
