At least 16 Syrian soldiers were killed and several were wounded in the suicide attack in the suburb of Jaramana. Syrian rebels assaulted a checkpoint in a pro-government suburb of Damascus on Saturday.
According to the Syrian observatory for human rights, the death came as clashes between rebels and government forces continued. Rebels control much of the countryside around Damascus but Jaramana, a Christian and Druse area, is most loyal to President Bashar Assad.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights believed that rebels led by the al-Qaida-linked Jabhat al-Nusra or Nusra Front, attacked there. Also trying to arrest the checkpoint in the Mleiha city, overlooking Jaramana. They also reported that after the bomb explosion, there was a heavy fighting.
United Nation reported that more than 100,000 people have killed in the country’s civil war, now in its third year, where the contenting sides remain largely opposed to any bartered peace. Syrian conflict began in March 2011 when forces of the government cracked down on peaceful protestors. From Syria’s ethnic and religious minorities (including Christians and members of his Alawite sect), Assad has drawn support. Syria’s Sunni Muslim majority dominates the rebels. Opposition attackers have previously targeted it with bombings and mortar rounds.
