Aamir Khan’s posters were burnt, provided security cover
New Delhi,24 November: On the streets Aamir Khan’s posters were burnt and an FIR was lodged against him in Delhi even as the Mumbai Police provided security cover to the actor. The latest controversy erupted after Aamir said that there was “growing despondency” in the country and that his “scared” director wife, Kiran Rao even thought of leaving the country fearing for their child’s life. On the other hand, attacking Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain today said there was a “deep political conspiracy” by the Congress to defame the country by harping on an atmosphere of intolerance, after Rahul Gandhi backed the actor’s comments. From voicing his views on pertinent issues like Narmada Bachao Andolan to scribbling bizarre blog posts comparing a colleague to a dog, the 50-year-old actor has ruffled many feathers leading to banning of his movies and even registering of police complaints. The statement left people divided on the social media even though a majority of them, including veteran actors like Anupam Kher and Paresh Rawal criticising the actor for panicking and over-reacting. Case in point is the controversy around the release of his films ‘Rang De Basanti’ and ‘Fanaa’ in 2006 when he faced intense backlash for pledging support to the Narmada agitation that ultimately led to ‘Fanaa’ getting banned in Gujarat.aamir2
A few months before the release, Aamir sat with the protesters to speak up for their rights but few months later, he distanced himself. Since then, he has never spoken on the issue. In fact, back in 2006, he had openly criticised the then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for his stand on the Narmada issue. However, when Modi became Prime Minister in May, 2014, Aamir met him personally and was all praise for the PM who had spared “his valuable time” to meet the actor. Ironically enough, ‘Fanaa’ and ‘Rang De Basanti’ turned out to be the biggest grossers of 2006, all thanks to the Narmada controversy while his last film, PK – where he appeared stark naked with a transistor covering his private parts while being accused of hurting the sentiments of Hindus — was the biggest hit in decades. Shahnawaz Hussain said Aamir had gained respect, fame and wealth due to the love and respect of all Indians.
When you become a star your comments may get you headlines and good coverage but they are used against the country by the enemies.Hussain said Aamir’s comments show that he is not scared but was scaring others and the BJP rejects his charge. “Where will Aamir and his family go other than India,” he wondered in response to the actor’s remarks yesterday that his wife Kiran Rao had even suggested that they should probably leave the country.”There is no other better country like India and no better neighbour than a Hindu for an Indian Muslim. What is the situation in Muslim countries and Europe. There is intolerance everywhere,” Hussain, a national spokesperson of the BJP, told a press meet here.
